Alpine meadows

The top meadows, apparently empty and inhospitable, present some species that are rare to find in our province. Where the grassland shares its space with rocks, during the winter season, some specimens of rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) show up. This bird, that today is threatened by climate change, in Winter is covered with a white plumage that allows it to blend in with the snow. Between rocks you can find some other animals like the rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) and some groups of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). 

There are also some botanic species of relevant interest that try to keep up with the hard climatic conditions of the summits. They are often found in pad-shape or either with a prostrate carriage and with thick or hairy leaves; they grow on rocky crests and between crevices: it is not easy to appreciate their beauty. For those passionate about botany, some of the major species are Androsace helvetica, Minuartia rupestris, Saussurea alpina and Antennaria carpatica.
